The Child Care Transition: A league table of early childhood education and care in economically advanced countries (UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre : Report Card 8)

UNICEF considered whether using childcare services can harm a child’s development, and says “the younger the child and the longer the hours-per-week spent in childcare the greater the risk”.

Commenting on the report, New Zealand’s Families Commissioner Lyn Campbell said there had been some progress on improving access to early childcare education and extending paid parental leave, but the report shows there is still some way to go before New Zealand can say it is doing the best possible for families.

Obviously a bit of a disconnect here between the value placed on parent-based child care versus contracting out to paid professionals.
